We are excited to launch a new project in Afghanistan, a country with a rich history of producing unique materials.
We collaborate with a network of silk artisans, from weavers and dyers in the cities of Kabul and Herat, to the country’s only remaining centre producing locally grown silk worms, continuing a tradition of producing pure and raw silk yarns.
Through technical support and business mentoring of our Afghan partners, the Ethical Fashion Initiative is enabling the production of new silk fabrics for international partners.
The Initiative is introducing traditional producers to new, locally appropriate technologies to scale-up and add value to their trade. The Initiative is currently supporting the installation of an industrial cashmere spinning facility in Herat, which will further expand Afghanistan’s cashmere export potential.
In Afghanistan, the Initiative’s main partner is Zarif Design. The project in Afghanistan is funded by the European Union.
