Afghanistan

Afghanistan, a country with a rich history of producing and trading unique materials on the Silk Road.

Silk

We collaborate with a network of silk artisans, from weavers and dyers in the cities of Kabul and Herat, to the country’s only remaining centre producing locally grown silk worms, continuing a tradition of producing pure and raw silk yarns.

Through technical support and business mentoring of our Afghan partners, the Ethical Fashion Initiative is enabling the production of new silk fabrics for international partners.

Cashmere

The Initiative is introducing traditional producers to new, locally appropriate technologies to scale-up and add value to their trade. A new industrial cashmere spinning facility in Herat will further expand Afghanistan’s cashmere export potential.

Social Enterprise Partners

In Afghanistan, our main fashion partner is Zarif Design. In food, we are working with 4 social enterprises for saffron, dried fruits and nuts.

The EFI’s project in Afghanistan is funded by the European Union.

Zarif is a women-owned and managed social enterprise established by Zolaykha Sherzad in 2005.

Zarif’s primary mission is to revive Afghanistan’s artistic culture, providing training and job opportunities for Afghans, mostly women; using fashion as a way to connect and empower communities of weavers, tailors and embroiderers.
