2014 – 2022

Mali

EFI’s work in Mali began in 2014 through partnerships with producers of the traditional Malian textile Dalifini (ngaga and saran). Workshops in Mali are specialised in natural dyeing, particularly indigo dye, as well as the traditional Bogolan (mud dyeing) technique.

In 2018, work in Mali grew to include collaborations with Touareg jewellers, a nomadic community that works out of simple but sophisticated mobile workshops producing silver, bronze and copper jewellery. Ethical Fashion Initiative’s work in Mali is supported by the European Union.

“I am a mother of one. My child is not yet old enough to go to school. The artisans at the atelier are my new family and what I like most about my work is the mutual aid between us. This order helped me improve my weaving skills on small width looms.”

– Natacha Nikiema, 22 years old
